“The first virtue in a soldier is endurance; courage is only the second virtue” - Napolean Bonaparte
Ten remain
Days 1 - 3
Exciting to be meeting ten new contestants and in a brand new location. Pumas, boar, a lake instead of the sea, southern hemisphere. Let’s see who is here.
Jim
Not sure about his priorities - coming here while his wife is welcoming three adoptees into their family??? Either won’t last long or very self absorbed.
Useful background and agree with the general approach of positive mental attitude, will be interesting to see if he can keep it up when the food runs short and the weather turns nasty.
The ‘feathering’ approach to starting a fire is cool and looks very quick and manageable.
Teepee building - love the way Americans use big words for simple concepts: ‘thermal regulation’ instead of ‘keeping warm’. The ten year old on the couch wants to know how he’ll stop rain coming in the top. Regardless, its pretty substantial looking for something that came together so quickly.
Interesting that its already ‘dark all the time’. I googled it and Patagonia only gets seven hours of daylight on its shortest day. I’m not sure exactly when this was filmed, but given that its leading into winter, he’s probably right, which leaves a long time for thinking and not a lot of time for doing.
Adopting the kids wins out over self absorption - sad for his survivalist dream, but totally right for his family dreams.
Britt
Seems very strategic, which makes for an interesting narrative. Might be a bit of an overthinker.
Loves his son a lot. That is going to be a strong pull to go home.
Already evidence of puma and some rustling in the bushes. He seems a lot more sanguine about it than I would be!
Slightly disbelieving that a boar could be caught in a snare like that. I mean, yes, but boars are massive. Will it work?
I’m definitely too much of a scaredy cat for this adventure, I would never get off the couch to see what’s making screaming noises in the middle of the night.
Callie
Waaaay more dedicated to the experience than I ever would be - swimming???? In a mountain lake leading into winter???? Definitely not.
The chair is pretty awesome for something pulled together on day 1 after a swim and building a temporary shelter.
Setting up cameras for all the exploring must be tedious.
I wonder if she’ll still think Patagonia is abundant on day 30?
First fish of the season!!! Cool seeing what was in its stomach and interesting that she’ll use that information for future fishing.
Fowler
That is a low shelter - would be grim to stay in there for very long on rainy days.
‘If I can imagine it, I can make it’. Seems self assured rather than arrogant. I’m looking forward to seeing how this plays out.
Another pretty strong homelife that is going to be challenging to leave behind.
Summary - 9 left
Jim - gone home
Britt - my pick to win, for no good reason
Callie - doesn’t seem to have a strong drive to endure
Fowler - seems a little overwhelmed
And six others who must have all lasted through the first three days.
Over and out,
